This bias keeps us tied to bad decisions just to avoid admitting failure. In Scrum teams, this can lead to wasted effort on tasks that deliver little or no value instead of focusing on new opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-3\" id=\"ember55\">\u26a0\ufe0f How does it manifest in Scrum?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-4 wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"ember56\">We often see this bias during sprints or planning sessions. A team may continue developing features that are no longer needed or provide little value, simply because they\u2019re &#8220;almost done.&#8221; This leads to wasted time, resources, energy, and delays in delivering what truly matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-5\" id=\"ember57\">\ud83d\udea8 Negative impacts on teams and individuals:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-6\">\n<li><strong>Reduced productivity<\/strong>: Time is spent finishing low-value tasks instead of focusing on high-value features.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Demotivation<\/strong>: Team members may feel frustrated or burned out because their work lacks visible impact.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Weakened agility<\/strong>: The team\u2019s ability to respond to changes in priorities drops significantly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Resource waste<\/strong>: Time and energy are used on tasks that no longer matter instead of those that bring real value.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Delayed value delivery<\/strong>: Sticking with ineffective tasks slows down the delivery of meaningful features, hurting customer satisfaction and competitiveness.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-7\" id=\"ember59\">\u2705 How can we avoid the Sunk Cost Fallacy?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-8\"><strong>Foster open communication<\/strong> Create a team culture where it\u2019s safe to admit when something isn\u2019t working. Focus on future benefits, not past effort.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-9\"><strong>Use retrospectives<\/strong> Regularly identify and discuss these situations, and explore how to avoid them in the future.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-10\"><strong>Prioritize based on value<\/strong> Always reassess the true value of tasks and be ready to stop or pivot when they no longer make sense.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-11\"><strong>Continuously review priorities<\/strong> Use sprint reviews and planning sessions to have honest discussions with stakeholders about whether current work is still worth pursuing.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-12 wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"ember61\">In Scrum and Agile, our goal is to deliver value quickly and efficiently. The Sunk Cost Fallacy gets in the way. If we want to be truly agile, we must learn to let go of past investments and focus on what brings the most value now.
